September 2, 2011 The WA Police have acknowledged there has been a policing problem in Ballajura, following a strong community campaign for a better police presence in Ballajura, according to West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti. Ms Saffioti said she welcomed the Police Commissioner’s visit last night and his acknowledgment that there needs to be a better police presence in Ballajura. “The initiative shown by the Commissioner to come out and speak directly to the residents has to be commended,” she said. “The information provided by the Police last night confirmed what the community has been saying since the Barnett Government closed the Ballajura Police Station. “It was clear response times have been well below average in Ballajura and crime in the area has increased in recent years. “It is also clear that more Police are needed on the streets at more times in Ballajura.” Ms Saffioti said it was disappointing it had taken nearly two years since the closure of police station for the Government to act and have policing reviewed in Ballajura. “It is a credit to the community and those residents that have stood up and had their voice heard – without them this review would not have happened,” she said. “Of course the proof will be in the pudding, and we will actively monitor police presence throughout the community over the coming months to see if there is an improvement. “Many residents still believe that a permanent police presence, by way of a police station, is the best way to actually prevent and respond to crime. “We will not give up until Ballajura receives the police presence it deserves.”Ballajura residents have started a facebook campaign.
